Sun-Proof Your Game: Tackling Skin Cancer Risks in Outdoor Sports

Updated: Dec 1, 2023

Hey, Sun-Chasers and Sport Enthusiasts!

Have you ever considered how the sun affects your skin while you're out there acing those outdoor sports? Let's shine a light on Skin Cancer risks and the great outdoors.

The Sunny Side of the Story: Risks of Prolonged Sun Exposure

Athletes, from hikers to tennis players and runners, exceed the recommended ultraviolet exposure limit by up to eight times during summer and autumn. While staying active reduces the risk of most cancers, skin cancer is an exception. For those in the top 10% for physical activity, there's an increased risk of skin cancer compared to the bottom 10%. Whether you're sprinting, serving, or scoring, your skin is on the frontline against UV rays.

Slathering vs. Skimping: The Sunscreen Saga

Surprisingly, less than 25% of athletes report regular use of sunscreen. And those who do often apply less than needed – think a shot glass full every few hours. For your face, you need at least two finger lengths worth of sunscreen. Especially for endurance athletes, forgetting to reapply is a common misstep that increases skin cancer risks. Most athletes miss applying sunscreen to key areas like hands, ears, chest, or lips, and skip sunscreen entirely outside their sport activities. It's not just about slathering it on; it's about covering all bases – literally.

Staying Youthful Under the Sun

Maintaining that youthful, sun-damage-free glow is all about consistency. Regular and ample application of sunscreen, combined with protective clothing and seeking shade, especially during peak UV hours (10 am to 4 pm), can make a world of difference. In addition, a consistent at home regimen that incorporates cleansing, toning, exfoliation, and a moisturizer will be the most effective supporting act to prevent signs of premature aging.

Takeaway: Your Skin, Your Shield

As athletes, our skin is as much a part of our gear as our sneakers or rackets. Let's protect it with the same zeal with which we play our sports. Incorporate sun safety into your training routine, and watch your skin thank you in leaps and bounds.
